Winter rye (or cereal rye) serves as an excellent winter cover crop for the garden through rapid growth. Deep roots associated with winter rye secure its place as a popular cover crop in the Northeast; these deep roost provide soil security despite forces of wind and water, and also prevent compaction within the soil. Rate is 5 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet. Plant in mid-September to early-October for a winter cover or plant in mid-October for a spring cover.
